Handmade Tea Advent Calendar

By Martina - Saturday, November 28, 2015

Hello you!
Christmas is just around the corner, and I've always loved to count the days up to Christmas with the help of a nice advent calendar. When I was little, my mum used to buy calendars with chocolate or stickers for my brother and I, and sometimes she even made them with her own hands, sewing up small pockets with embroidered numbers on the front.

Last year I made a handmade calendar for my boyfriend, and he loved it so much I decided to make another one this year.

The great thing about handmade advent calendars is that you can customise them in many ways. My boyfriend loves tea, so I decided to make him a tea advent calendar. This kind of calendar can become really expensive if you choose to buy it in a shop, while if you try to make it at home you can cut on the costs and still have a nice, original, flavoury calendar.

Last year I simply bought a box of Sir Winston green tea teabags at the local supermarket, glued them onto a white cardboard sheet, printed out some cute christmassy numbers that I found on the Internet and added some tiny Santa-shaped chocolate here and there. I also wrote short messages and quotes on the cardboard sheet, so that each time my boyfriend removed a teabag from it he found a sweet message underneath.

This year I wanted to surprise him once again, so I changed it up a little bit by getting many different varieties of tea. I found a tiny shop in my hometown that sells dozens of qualities and brands and bought 24 teabags from two brands, Whittington and Natursan. Then I pinned them on my boyfriend's corkboard while he was out, and wrote numbers from 1 to 24 directly on the teabags with a black felt tip pen instead of printing out numbers. I did so because I liked how all the different teas looked and didn't want to cover them up with huge stickers. The last touch was adding short messages behind some of the teabags (not all of them though, this way he will have to find out day after day if the teabag hides something or not). I wrote some sweet quotes and activities that we might do together during the month onto small pieces of paper, but this step is completely up to you, you might add absolutely anything, from book quotes to song titles, or even print out some jigsaw pieces and stick one behind each teabag.

What I love the most about this project is that it's really easy to do and it doesn't require any particular skill, since you can customise every single step. It can cost as much or as little as you want, you can use teabags bought at the supermarket or in a fancy teashop, you can add messages, chocolate, decorations, anything. You can even skip the teabags and use something else instead, like coffee capsules or lollipops. You can do it for yourself or for a friend, I'm pretty sure anyone would be glad to have a handmade calendar.

Let me know what you think and, if you've ever made a DIY advent calendar, then show me your pictures, I'd love to see them!
