Esselunga Collectibles

Talking about long overdue posts, there is another topic I meant to talk about last year and never got around to.

In September last year Esselunga - which is a big chain of supermarkets in Northern Italy - released a collection of Harry Potter figurines.

For a few years now, around the beginning of the academic year, they have been partnering with companies such as Pixar, Dreamworks and Disney and releasing collectible cards or toys that you could get every time you went shopping by simply swiping the loyalty card at the till. My brother and I have collected them every year, regardless of the topic, as it's always nice to feel the childish excitement of unwrapping a mysterious item or card and slowly build up a collection.

Last year we collected Star Wars characters, in the past we had Pixar cards, stickers, even Dreamworks plush toys (I still have my Gingerbread Man from Shrek).

Of course they decided to bring out the HP collection on the first year I am not living at my parent's, and therefore not fully able to enjoy the experience. Anyway, my brother collected them for me, and kept me updated on what he found weekly. We managed to get all of the characters except for Fred Weasley (man, that's a shame - I love the Weasleys).

When I went back to my hometown in September the collection had just started and there were Harry Potter posters everywhere in town and the supermarket had the trio’s face everywhere, it was incredible. My ten year old self would have never believed her eyes.

Why do I care so much about collecting silly small toys anyway, you ask? Well, I am definitely not a hoarder, and I tend to get rid of anything I don’t need - be it clothes, makeup or any sort of gadget - but I have a soft spot for Harry Potter, always had, and I have always collected anything HP, from magazine pages to toys to books, I have never ever thrown away anything, not even silly broken things like my first witch hat or the collection of chopsticks we used as wands - it’s all in my old room and one day if I’ll have enough space I’ll just proudly display the best bits in my office/room or just on a shelf somewhere.

I would love to post some pictures of my collection and share some stories at some point, let me know if you would like to read them.
