Mind at Work | Hamiltuesday

"Look around, look around at how
Lucky we are to be alive right now!"*

Fun fact: this is one of the first Hamilton songs I've ever listened to.

I have been curious about Hamilton ever since it came out and I immediately knew I would love it. I follow a few people on Instagram that like pretty much the same things I like, and some of them live in NY and watch lots of shows - and they obviously fell in love with this one immediately - but at the time the show came out I had no space in my mind for something new (has it ever happened to you? It’s something that is really hard to describe, sometimes I know I should listen/read/watch something but I postpone it endlessly because my head is saturated for the time being - at the moment I’m doing that with Dear Evan Hansen, I already know I will love it yet I haven’t listened to its soundtrack once).

Anyway, everyone kept mentioning the Schuyler sisters on Instagram/Twitter/any social media ever, and I was curious about the pronunciation of that name, as in my head I read it the German way, but had a feeling I might be wrong. I listened to The Schuyler Sisters because I figured someone would sing their name and answer to my question, and I ended up watching a few videos like Working with Lemons' beautiful take on the song (I love their videos, I mean, have you seen Dear Theodosia? *heart eyes*).

My favourite part out of this song is when Angelica raps about Common Sense and starts revealing her personality to the public, it's so beautiful to listen to, I could just put it on replay all day (and I still wouldn't be able to keep up with the lyrics, hahah, shame on me).

I also love the exchange of rhymes between Angelica and Burr, although this is probably the song in which I like Burr the least. “Burr you disgust me / So you discussed me / I’m a trust fund baby you can trust me” apparently is Lin’s wife’s favourite line in the show.

Lin defines this song as the One Short Day of this musical. I admit I kind of struggle to see the similarities here, but I can see the link to Wicked’s song in the part where they sing that New York is the greatest city in the world.

* The Hamiltome quotes that Lin repeats this line to himself everyday.

Do you have any interesting thoughts on this track? Let me know what you think, as I believe I kind of failed with my analysis this time.
